'Transparency Can’t Be Optional': Karti Chidambaram Demands Answers From Govt On Air India AI-171 Crash

Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram has stepped up pressure on the Union government over the deadly crash of Air India Flight AI-171, demanding immediate transparency, accountability, and a comprehensive public briefing on the ongoing investigation. Raising serious concerns over what he described as a lack of clarity, Chidambaram said the nation deserves clear answers after one of India’s worst aviation disasters.

In a formal communication addressed to Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, the Tamil Nadu MP flagged the emergence of fresh information following the preliminary inquiry into the crash. He stressed that any new findings must be placed in the public domain without delay, especially given the scale of loss and the widespread anxiety among passengers and their families.

Chidambaram underlined that the death of hundreds of people cannot be followed by procedural silence. He sought details on whether further technical probes have been initiated, if independent aviation experts have been roped in, and whether oversight mechanisms are actively monitoring the investigation. According to him, restoring public confidence in air safety requires openness, not selective disclosures.

The Air India Flight AI-171 tragedy occurred on June 12, 2025, when the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed minutes after takeoff. The aircraft slammed into a medical hostel complex on the city’s outskirts, triggering a massive fire and widespread destruction. A total of 265 people lost their lives, including passengers, crew members, and individuals on the ground. Only one passenger survived the crash, making it one of the deadliest aviation incidents of the past decade.

The incident sparked national outrage and renewed debate over aviation safety standards, aircraft maintenance, and regulatory oversight. Chidambaram’s intervention reflects growing political and public pressure on authorities to ensure that responsibility is clearly fixed and systemic failures, if any, are addressed.
