Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away in the early hours of Tuesday at his Pune residence after battling a prolonged illness. He was 81. Family members confirmed that he breathed his last around 3:30 am, marking the end of a long and influential public life that left a deep imprint on both Indian politics and sports administration.
Kalmadi is survived by his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, two married daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. His mortal remains will be kept at his Erandwane residence until Tuesday afternoon to allow people to pay their respects. The final rites are scheduled to be held later in the day at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth, Pune.
Soon after news of his demise broke, leaders from across the political spectrum expressed condolences and remembered his role in public life. Many acknowledged his influence in shaping Pune’s political landscape and his long association with national-level governance.
Suresh Kalmadi was among the most recognisable political figures to emerge from Pune. Over the years, he represented the city multiple times in Parliament and held key responsibilities at the Centre, including a stint as Minister of State for Railways. Known for his organisational skills and political acumen, he was often seen as a decisive force in local and national politics.
Beyond politics, Kalmadi played a major role in Indian sports administration. As president of the Indian Olympic Association, he led the body for several years and was closely associated with efforts to modernise sports infrastructure in the country. His tenure brought Indian sports into sharper international focus, particularly during the period leading up to major global events.
