The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday unveiled its ‘Sankalp Patra’ for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections in Guwahati, laying out an aggressive roadmap focused on development, jobs, security, and economic expansion.

The manifesto was released in the presence of senior leaders including Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, signalling the party’s high-stakes push to retain power in the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma outlined several key promises, stating that the government will move towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code, with exemptions for Sixth Schedule and tribal areas. He also announced a major employment target, promising the creation of two lakh jobs over the next five years as part of the party’s growth agenda.

A major focus of the manifesto is flood management, a long-standing issue in Assam. The BJP has pledged an investment of ₹18,000 crore in the first two years to work towards making the state flood-free. In addition, the party proposed a large-scale expansion of education and healthcare infrastructure through a “One District, One Medical College, One University, One Engineering College” model.

The document also emphasises strengthening law and order, with strict action proposed against issues like so-called “love jihad,” while projecting a vision of a safer and more developed Assam.

State BJP president Dilip Saikia said the manifesto has been prepared after gathering more than 2.45 lakh suggestions from people across the state, presenting it as a people-driven blueprint for governance.

Highlighting the economic angle, Nirmala Sitharaman said Assam has witnessed rapid growth under BJP rule, claiming that the state’s GDP has expanded more than three times in the past decade. She also pointed to a rise in per capita income, improved infrastructure, and better connectivity backed by increased central support.

At the same time, the BJP launched a political attack on the Indian National Congress, contrasting its own infrastructure achievements—such as bridges over the Brahmaputra and railway electrification—with what it described as slower development during earlier Congress governments.

With the announcement of the manifesto, the political battle lines for the Assam elections are now clearly drawn. Voting for the 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, while results will be declared on May 4. The BJP-led alliance is aiming for a third straight term under Himanta Biswa Sarma, while the Congress is looking to regain lost ground in the state.
