A fresh political controversy erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday night after a section of students held a protest on campus following the Supreme Court’s refusal to grant bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case. The demonstration quickly escalated into sloganeering against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, drawing the attention of law enforcement agencies.
According to information available, the protest took place near Sabarmati Hostel during an informal gathering referred to by students as “Godzilla Dhaba.” Participants reportedly assembled to mark the anniversary of the 2020 violence on the JNU campus and to express dissent over the court’s decision to deny bail to Khalid and Imam. During the gathering, objectionable political slogans were raised, some of which were captured in a short video clip that has since circulated widely on social media platforms.
The Delhi Police acknowledged that they are aware of the incident and the viral video. Senior police officials stated that while no formal complaint has been registered so far, details related to the event have been sought and a preliminary inquiry is underway to ascertain the facts. Authorities are also examining the video footage to identify those involved and to determine whether any legal provisions have been violated.
