The survivor of the 2017 Unnao rape case has come forward with serious allegations, claiming that her personal identity is being deliberately exposed on social media, putting her safety at grave risk. In an emotional video message shared online on Saturday, she accused the daughters of jailed former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and their supporters of running a targeted online campaign against her.
The survivor said that over the past few days, posts revealing her identity have been widely circulated on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. She alleged that this was done intentionally, despite legal protections meant to safeguard the privacy of victims of sexual violence. Expressing fear for her life, she appealed to the public to help protect her and ensure her safety.
According to the survivor, the online activity intensified after Sengar’s family members began posting messages defending him and questioning the verdict in the case. She claimed that individuals identifying themselves as Sengar’s supporters have also targeted her husband, spreading defamatory content and attempting to discredit her struggle for justice.
The survivor further alleged that social media posts are being circulated in support of Sengar, including calls for a public gathering in Delhi later this month. She said such actions were deeply distressing and sent a dangerous message by rallying behind a person who has already been convicted by the courts. “I am also a daughter of this country. Justice should not be divided by caste or influence,” she said in her appeal.
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former legislator from Uttar Pradesh, was convicted in December 2019 for raping a minor and was sentenced to life imprisonment along with a monetary fine. The survivor said she continues to place her faith in the judiciary but urged society to stand with victims rather than those found guilty of serious crimes.
The legal battle remains active. On December 29, the Supreme Court stayed a Delhi High Court order that had temporarily suspended Sengar’s life sentence and granted him bail, ensuring that he remains in custody. While hearing a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the top court observed that the case involved the rape of a minor and underscored the responsibility of the justice system toward the victim.
