Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today reaffirmed his government's commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, providing an update on the bill’s progress and the next steps for its full enactment.
In a statement to the media, Dhami reiterated the promise made to the people of Uttarakhand during the 2022 elections: that the UCC bill would be introduced as soon as his government took office. He emphasized that the draft committee had worked diligently on the bill, which was subsequently passed and received approval from the President. With the bill now an official act, the process for its implementation has entered its final stages.
“The process of training for the effective implementation of the UCC is nearly complete,” Dhami said, adding that his government has taken into account all relevant factors before announcing the official dates for the law’s enforcement. He assured that a thorough analysis of all aspects had been conducted to ensure a smooth transition.
The Uniform Civil Code aims to standardize personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and other family matters for all citizens, irrespective of religion or community. Uttarakhand is among the first states to push for the implementation of such a law, joining a national conversation about the UCC and its potential impact on the Indian legal landscape.
