In a result that has surprised political observers and reshaped narratives around identity politics, Vijay Ubale—popularly known among locals as “Vijay Sir”—has registered a decisive victory from Govandi’s Ward 140 in the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Contesting on an AIMIM ticket, Ubale emerged victorious with a clear margin of 1,237 votes, defeating candidates from multiple established parties.

Ubale’s win is being seen as a breakthrough moment for the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM, as a Hindu candidate securing victory on the party’s symbol challenges long-held assumptions about its voter base. Supporters flooded the streets of Govandi soon after the results were declared, with visuals of celebrations and slogans praising “Vijay Sir” rapidly spreading across social media platforms.

A grassroots social worker with deep local roots, Ubale built his campaign around ward-level development issues rather than ideological rhetoric. From civic amenities and sanitation to youth employment and infrastructure, his focus on “Vikas first” resonated strongly with voters in a ward known for its complex and diverse demographic mix. His campaign successfully cut across community lines, helping him defeat candidates from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP-SP, and the Aam Aadmi Party.

Political analysts say Ubale’s victory reflects growing voter fatigue with traditional party equations and a rising preference for candidates perceived as accessible and performance-driven. For AIMIM, the result is symbolic as well as strategic—signalling its expanding footprint in Mumbai’s municipal politics.

The 2026 BMC elections have turned out to be a landmark for AIMIM in Mumbai. The party defied exit poll predictions to secure eight seats in the civic body, significantly improving its previous performance. Alongside Ubale, candidates like Khairunisa Akbar Husain and Mehzabin Khan also registered wins, indicating a blend of seasoned leadership and emerging faces within the party.

Statewide, AIMIM posted strong numbers by winning 121 municipal seats across Maharashtra, becoming a major force in cities like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Malegaon, and Nanded, while also marking its entry into new urban centres.
