What Is ‘Golden Dome’? Donald Trump Unveils $175 Billion Missile Shield To Protect U.S. From Global Threats

US President Donald Trump unveiled fresh details about his administration’s ambitious USD 175 billion missile defence initiative, dubbed the "Golden Dome", pledging its full operational deployment within three years.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said, “This design for the Golden Dome will integrate with our existing defence capabilities and should be fully operational before the end of my term. So we’ll have it done in about three years,” according to a report by The Hill.

The “Golden Dome,” first teased in January, is aimed at defending the United States from advanced long-range missile threats, including those launched from foreign nations or even outer space. Trump emphasized its technological scope, asserting, “Once fully constructed, Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space, and we will have the best system ever built.”

According to The Hill, the finalized architecture of the system will be overseen by General Michael Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations, who is expected to manage its integration with existing US defence infrastructure such as THAAD and NASAMS.

During the announcement, Trump was accompanied by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and GOP Senators Dan Sullivan, Jim Banks, and Kevin Cramer. A striking visual was also part of the event — posters displaying a golden shield enveloping the United States, emblazoned with the ominous phrase, “This is a Very Dangerous World.”

The initiative has drawn international attention, with Trump noting that Canada has expressed interest in collaborating on the system. Domestically, the shield is expected to involve states with significant defence or space infrastructure, including Alaska, Florida, Georgia, and Indiana. Likely contractors for the massive project could include Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and L3Harris Technologies.

Despite the fanfare, funding for the programme remains in flux. While a preliminary USD 25 billion has been earmarked under a Republican-backed reconciliation bill, The Hill reported that both conservative and moderate Republicans are pressing for legislative revisions before approving the full package. The Congressional Budget Office has warned the project could balloon to over USD 500 billion over the next two decades, citing the system’s technological complexity.

Trump insisted the project would be entirely made in America and heavily modeled on Israel’s successful Iron Dome, albeit on a much larger scale. Critics, however, question the necessity of such a project given the country’s existing missile defence systems. Trump countered this by saying the new system would “add a critical new layer of protection.”

The initiative has also sparked ethical concerns among Democrats, especially over the potential involvement of SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, who reportedly holds an advisory role in Trump’s camp.

Capping off his announcement, Trump invoked the legacy of Ronald Reagan, saying the former president had once envisioned a similar defence shield. “Ronald Reagan wanted it many years ago, but they didn’t have the technology. But it’s something we’re going to have… In the campaign, I promised the American people that I would build a cutting-edge missile defence shield to protect our homeland from the threat of foreign missile attack. And that’s what we’re doing today,” Trump said, as quoted by The Hill.
