Police authorities in Pune district have formally begun the legal process following the aircraft accident in Baramati that led to the passing away of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and others. Officials confirmed that an accidental death report has been filed at the Baramati taluka police station to document the incident and initiate further action as required under law.

The crash occurred on Wednesday morning when a chartered aircraft came down close to the tabletop runway at Baramati airport, only a short distance from the landing strip. Ajit Pawar, aged 66, was travelling from Mumbai to Pune district, where he was scheduled to participate in a series of political programmes linked to the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections. Four other occupants of the aircraft were also on board at the time of the accident.

Senior officers from Pune Rural Police said the registration of an ADR is a standard step in such cases. Once procedural formalities are completed, the case file will be transferred to the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department. The CID’s role will be to carry out a detailed legal probe based on the technical findings and conclusions submitted by aviation authorities.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, which functions under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has already taken charge of examining the crash from an aviation safety perspective. Its investigation will focus on operational, technical, and environmental aspects of the incident, and its report will form the foundation for further action by state agencies.

Police officials clarified that while formal transfer orders are awaited, the CID is expected to assume responsibility for the case in due course. Until then, local police will continue to assist investigators and preserve records linked to the incident.

Ajit Pawar, a central figure in Maharashtra’s politics and the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party, was en route to attend multiple public meetings across Pune district on the day of the accident.
