Baramati witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of grief on Thursday as thousands gathered to bid farewell to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who lost his life in a tragic plane crash the previous day. The funeral rites, held at the Vidya Pratishthan grounds, brought the town to a standstill, highlighting the deep bond Pawar shared with his supporters and his lasting influence in the region.
Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, bowed her head in solemn respect at the pyre, visibly overcome by grief, while his sons, Parth and Jay Pawar, and nephew Rohit Pawar stood close by. Family members, senior political leaders, and dignitaries attended the final rites, reflecting the leader’s stature in Maharashtra politics. Security forces were deployed across the city to manage the massive crowds and ensure smooth proceedings.
The funeral procession began from Pawar’s Katewadi residence, with his mortal remains carried in a flower-adorned military truck through the streets. Supporters lined the route, showering petals and chanting slogans of “Ajit Dada Amar Rahe,” a testament to the affection and loyalty he inspired over his decades-long political career.
Ajit Pawar, aged 66, died when the chartered aircraft he was travelling in crashed near the tabletop runway at Baramati airport on Wednesday. The crash also claimed the lives of the two pilots, a flight attendant, and his personal security officer. The incident has left a profound impact on Maharashtra’s political landscape, with leaders from across party lines expressing condolences and solidarity with the family.
In recognition of his contribution to the state, the Maharashtra government declared three days of state mourning. Flags were flown at half-mast, and official events were postponed. Pawar’s political journey, spanning over 35 years, included leadership roles in the NCP and significant influence over rural development, cooperative sectors, and electoral politics in the Pune region. His sudden demise has left a vacuum in both the party and the state’s governance.
