In a landmark move to promote regional languages and empower Marathi-speaking students, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that all Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) competitive exams will now be conducted in Marathi. The announcement came in the state legislative council on Wednesday in response to a question by Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Milind Narvekar, who raised concerns over certain engineering and agriculture-related exams being conducted only in English.
Fadnavis clarified that while most MPSC exams are already conducted in both Marathi and English, some specialized subjects, particularly in agricultural engineering, were held only in English due to a court ruling. The reason cited was the lack of Marathi textbooks for these disciplines. However, the new education policy now allows engineering courses to be conducted in Marathi, paving the way for MPSC exams to follow suit.
"The state government has now decided that even if textbooks are currently unavailable, we will ensure that new study material is developed. A structured timeline will be set with MPSC, and these exams will soon be available in Marathi as well," Fadnavis assured.
