Bihar politics has heated up after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar gave a strong public signal that Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary could soon take over as the next Chief Minister, triggering intense speculation of a leadership shift in the state.
Speaking at a public rally in Jamui during his ongoing “Samriddhi Yatra,” Nitish made a symbolic gesture by placing his hand on Choudhary’s shoulder and asking people to support him. With a smile, he said that Samrat would now “handle all the work,” a remark widely seen as an open endorsement of his deputy.
This is not the first time Nitish has hinted at a successor, but political observers say his latest statement is far more direct. The timing has added to the buzz, with reports suggesting that Nitish may soon move to the Rajya Sabha and step down from the मुख्यमंत्री post next month.
The development has strengthened speculation that the Bharatiya Janata Party could finally claim the top post in Bihar. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the last Assembly elections and has been steadily increasing its influence within the ruling alliance.
Samrat Choudhary currently holds the crucial Home portfolio and is considered the number two leader in the government. Notably, Nitish Kumar had retained the Home department for nearly two decades but handed it over to the BJP in a major political shift, indicating changing power dynamics.
Choudhary, who represents the Tarapur constituency, belongs to the Kushwaha community, one of the largest OBC groups in Bihar after the Yadavs. Political analysts believe the BJP may project him as Chief Minister to strengthen its hold among non-Yadav OBC voters, especially at a time when the Rashtriya Janata Dal is also targeting this voter base.
Bihar remains one of the few major Hindi heartland states where the BJP has not yet held the Chief Minister’s position independently. Elevating Choudhary could mark a historic shift for the party while reshaping the state’s political landscape.
With Nitish Kumar’s latest remarks, the possibility of a major leadership transition in Bihar appears closer than ever, setting the stage for a significant political change in the coming weeks.
