The political suspense in Tamil Nadu may soon come to an end as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is now reportedly on the verge of achieving the numbers needed to form the next government in the state.
Sources indicated that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has decided to support the TVK-led front, a move that could prove decisive in ending the ongoing battle over majority figures in the Assembly. Although an official confirmation from VCK is still awaited, the development has generated fresh momentum for Vijay’s coalition.
Before this reported support, the TVK alliance had the backing of 116 elected MLAs. The coalition included support from Congress legislators and Left parties, both of whom played a key role in keeping the alliance competitive in the post-election scenario.
If VCK’s two MLAs formally join the bloc, the alliance tally will rise to 118 — the minimum number required to command a majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Political sources said the Left parties had extended unconditional support to Vijay’s coalition soon after the election results, while Congress leaders were believed to have attached certain political expectations to their backing.
The latest development comes shortly after Vijay’s meeting with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Friday evening. During the interaction, Vijay reportedly handed over signatures from 116 supporting MLAs in an effort to stake claim to form the government.
However, the Governor had not moved forward with an invitation as the alliance remained short of the majority mark at the time.
Friday’s meeting was Vijay’s third visit to Raj Bhavan since the declaration of election results on May 4. Earlier attempts to secure an invitation to form the government had reportedly been delayed due to the unresolved numbers game.
With VCK now expected to strengthen the alliance, political observers believe Tamil Nadu could soon witness the formation of its first TVK-led coalition government, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
