With the southwest monsoon intensifying, authorities in Karnataka and Kerala have taken swift action to ensure public safety by declaring school holidays in multiple districts and ramping up disaster preparedness across vulnerable regions.

In Karnataka, continuous downpours have led to the closure of all Anganwadis, primary, and high schools in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district for June 26. While the district as a whole remains open, Belthangady has faced frequent shutdowns in recent days due to persistent rainfall and weather-related challenges.

Kodagu district has also declared a rain holiday for schools, with local officials conducting proactive inspections in landslide-prone areas and setting up temporary shelters where necessary. Safety measures, including evacuation preparedness and monitoring of low-lying zones, have been reinforced to reduce risk to life and property.

In neighbouring Kerala, at least three districts — including Idukki — have declared school holidays for June 26. Reports from local media indicate that more districts may follow suit as the rainfall continues. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued strong advisories and instructed local bodies to remain on high alert, particularly in areas prone to landslides, waterlogging, and flash floods.

Officials in both states have urged residents to stay away from rivers, water bodies, and coastal areas, especially during high tide and heavy showers. People living in low-lying regions and hilly terrains have been advised to exercise caution and stay tuned to local advisories.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts for several districts in coastal and Western Ghats regions, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. As part of monsoon readiness, the State Disaster Response Forces, local administrations, and education departments are coordinating closely to ensure timely updates and on-ground support.
