Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday outlined a series of major infrastructure projects underway and planned across the state, asserting that the last five years have seen unprecedented development in the sector. Speaking about ongoing works, Sarma highlighted bridges, transport corridors, healthcare expansion and energy projects aimed at transforming Assam’s connectivity and economic capacity.

The Chief Minister said that four new bridges over the Brahmaputra River are currently under construction, significantly strengthening links between northern and southern Assam. He announced that the long-awaited bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati is scheduled to be opened in February, improving daily commute and easing traffic pressure on the city.

Sarma further revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the ambitious Kaziranga elevated corridor later this month. The nearly 34-kilometre-long project, estimated to cost around ₹6,957 crore, is designed to ensure smooth traffic movement while protecting wildlife in the Kaziranga region.

Among the most ambitious proposals is the twin-tube underwater tunnel connecting Gohpur to Numaligarh. The road-cum-rail tunnel project, with an estimated cost of ₹22,000 crore, has already received approval from the Union Finance Ministry, the Chief Minister said.

In the railway sector, Sarma stated that Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the proposed Gelephu railway line project in February. Additionally, an elevated corridor near the Guwahati airport is planned as part of a larger Aerocity project spread across 68 acres.

On healthcare, Sarma announced that a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the Asian Development Bank for the construction of a new state-of-the-art hospital at Guwahati Medical College. The existing structure will be completely demolished, and the new facility will be built at a cost of ₹2,200 crore.

The Chief Minister also said that Assam will soon inaugurate the 120 MW Kopili hydroelectric project, adding to the state’s renewable energy capacity.
