India Records 536 Heatwave Days: Highest In 14 Years, IMD Reports

India has witnessed an unprecedented heatwave season this summer, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting a record 536 heatwave days across the country. This marks the highest number of heatwave days recorded since 2010, reflecting a significant climate anomaly impacting various regions.

According to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD, the summer of 2024 saw 181 heatwave days in June alone, surpassing the previous high of 177 days observed in 2010. In northwest India, temperatures soared well above normal levels, with the average maximum temperature reaching 38.02 degrees Celsius, an increase of 1.96 degrees Celsius from the average. The average minimum temperature was also notably higher at 25.44 degrees Celsius, 1.35 degrees above normal.

Of particular concern is northwest India's June mean temperature, which averaged 31.73 degrees Celsius, surpassing records dating back to 1901 and highlighting the severity of the heatwave. This region's climatic conditions underscored the broader trend of rising temperatures and prolonged heat spells experienced nationwide.

Mohapatra further noted that northeast India faced a significant rainfall deficit of 33 percent in June. This shortfall was attributed to the sluggish progress of the monsoon over northern and eastern parts of the country, compounded by the absence of favorable weather systems. Typically, three low-pressure areas are expected during this period, but only one developed by the end of June due to unfavorable Madden-Julian Oscillation conditions.

The IMD's observations and data highlight the urgent need for climate adaptation strategies and heightened awareness about the escalating impact of climate change on India's weather patterns. As extreme weather events become more frequent, understanding and mitigating their effects will be crucial for safeguarding communities and ecosystems across the nation.

This report serves as a stark reminder of the pressing challenges posed by climate variability and underscores the imperative for proactive measures to address its consequences.
