A late-night tragedy unfolded near Bhandup railway station in Mumbai on Monday when a BEST bus rammed into a group of commuters, killing four people and leaving nine others injured. The incident has sent shockwaves across the city after disturbing CCTV footage of the accident surfaced online.

The mishap took place around 10 pm on the busy Bhandup Station Road, a narrow stretch that sees heavy pedestrian movement during peak return hours. According to initial findings, several passengers were standing in an informal queue near the roadside when the bus suddenly reversed, triggering chaos.
CCTV visuals obtained from a nearby shop capture the terrifying sequence of events. The footage shows people waiting calmly moments before panic erupts. Commuters are seen scrambling for safety as the rear portion of the bus enters the frame and knocks down multiple pedestrians. In one chilling moment, a man is seen being crushed under the vehicle as it continues to move backwards.
Police officials said that teams from Bhandup police station immediately rushed to the scene after receiving the alert. The area was cordoned off, and traffic movement near the station was halted to facilitate rescue operations. Injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Rajawadi Hospital and MT Agarwal Hospital, with the help of ambulances and local residents.
Deputy Police Commissioner Hemra Singh Rajput confirmed the casualties, stating that four people lost their lives in the accident, while nine others sustained injuries of varying severity. The bus driver has been detained for questioning, and investigators are examining CCTV footage to determine whether negligence or mechanical failure led to the tragedy.
Civic officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s disaster management unit said that some victims were declared dead on arrival, underscoring the seriousness of the impact. The incident has reignited concerns over public transport safety and pedestrian management around Mumbai’s crowded railway stations.
