A major political storm has erupted in Odisha after BJD president and former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched a sharp attack on BJP MP Nishikant Dubey over his controversial remarks about legendary leader Biju Patnaik.
Speaking outside the Assembly in Bhubaneswar, Naveen Patnaik said Dubey “needs the attention of a mental doctor” for making what he called “outrageous” statements.
Row Over CIA Allegation
The controversy began after Nishikant Dubey, on March 27, alleged that Biju Patnaik acted as a link between former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the CIA during the 1960s India-China war.
The statement triggered widespread outrage, especially in Odisha, where Biju Patnaik is revered as a freedom fighter and iconic leader.
Reacting strongly, Naveen Patnaik dismissed the claim and said, “I am surprised by the outrageous things Dubey said about Biju Babu.”
Strong Defence of Biju Patnaik
Naveen Patnaik also questioned the logic behind the allegations, saying he does not believe Nehru would have set up any such arrangement involving Biju Patnaik while he was serving as Odisha’s Chief Minister.
He defended his father’s legacy, calling the remarks baseless and insulting.
Political Fallout Intensifies
The controversy quickly escalated into a political flashpoint, with multiple BJD leaders condemning Dubey’s remarks.
BJD MP Sasmit Patra resigned from a parliamentary committee headed by Nishikant Dubey in protest.
Other leaders including Manas Mangaraj, Subhasish Khuntia, Muzibulla Khan, and Niranjan Bishi also criticised the BJP MP.
Demand for Apology
Senior BJD leader Debi Prasad Mishra demanded an unconditional apology, calling Dubey’s comments an “insult to the pride of Odisha” and to a “true patriot.”
