Speculation over Bihar’s next Chief Minister has intensified after Nitish Kumar secured a Rajya Sabha seat, with strong indications that he may soon step down from the top post.
Sources suggest Kumar could resign around April 8, ahead of taking oath as a Rajya Sabha MP on April 13—potentially marking the end of his long tenure in Bihar politics.
JD(U) Signals Careful Transition
The Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has made it clear that any leadership change will be handled cautiously.
Party insiders have stressed that the next Chief Minister must:
- Have Nitish Kumar’s full backing
- Continue his political legacy
- Maintain the delicate caste and social balance built over the years
The party is keen to avoid sudden leadership decisions like those seen in other BJP-ruled states.
Nishant Kumar Emerges as Top Contender
Among the frontrunners, Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar is gaining strong traction.
Former MP Anand Mohan Singh has openly backed Nishant, stating that if he enters politics, he should be made Chief Minister directly rather than given a smaller role.
His potential elevation could mark a major generational shift in Bihar politics.
BJP Leaders Also in Race
At the same time, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are also being considered.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is seen as a strong contender, with supporters pointing to his appeal among backward caste voters.
However, the BJP has maintained a cautious stance, saying the final decision will be taken by the central leadership in consultation with NDA allies.

With JD(U) holding 85 MLAs—just four fewer than BJP—the regional party is asserting its influence in deciding the next Chief Minister.
JD(U) leaders have also emphasised the importance of keeping allies like Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Hindustani Awam Morcha on board.
