In a significant step toward reclaiming encroached government land, the civil administration of Assam's Goalpara district launched a large-scale eviction operation on Monday in the Hasila Beel region. The drive aims to clear approximately 1,500 bighas of land illegally occupied by 667 households and multiple unauthorized structures.

Backed by a strong police force, the operation is focused on dismantling illegal encroachments, including five unrecognized schools, a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project, as well as shops, private borewells, boundary walls, and various other constructions. The authorities had issued formal notices to settlers well in advance and launched a widespread public awareness campaign urging residents to vacate the area by June 15.

To maintain law and order, heavy police deployment has been ensured at the eviction site. According to local officials, the reclaimed land will be repurposed for infrastructure development and sustainable public projects, in line with the government's broader land policy.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently reiterated his government’s resolve to confront the issue of illegal land occupation across the state. Calling the ongoing efforts “monumental in scope,” the Chief Minister stated: “In the past four years, we have conducted a comprehensive campaign to reclaim government land, and this effort will continue.”

Sarma also expressed concern over what he described as a "politically-motivated demographic transformation" impacting Assam’s socio-cultural balance.
