Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp political attack on Mamata Banerjee shortly after Suvendu Adhikari was officially selected as leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal.
Addressing party leaders and legislators in Kolkata, Shah said Mamata Banerjee had suffered defeat even in her political stronghold of Bhabanipur, describing Adhikari’s victory as a symbolic turning point in Bengal politics.
“Didi, iss baar Suvendu Da ne aapke ghar mein aakar aapko haraya hai,” Shah remarked while addressing BJP workers after the legislature party meeting.
BJP Declares Suvendu Adhikari as Legislature Party Leader
The announcement came after a crucial BJP meeting attended by newly elected MLAs following the party’s sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Amit Shah formally declared Adhikari as the BJP legislature party leader, clearing the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of the state.
Adhikari’s political rise has drawn national attention over the past few years. After defeating Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 elections, he once again emerged victorious against her in Bhabanipur in 2026, strengthening his image as one of the BJP’s strongest leaders in Bengal.
Shah Links BJP Victory to Ideological Battle
During his speech, Shah described the BJP’s Bengal victory as more than just an electoral success, calling it part of a larger ideological movement. He said Bengal’s political and cultural direction had been influenced for decades by “foreign ideologies” and claimed the BJP now had the responsibility to reconnect the state with the legacy of spiritual icons like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda.
He also referred to the BJP’s long political journey in Bengal and invoked Syama Prasad Mookerjee while praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for expanding the party’s influence in eastern India.
Shah said senior BJP workers had once told him that the party’s national rise would remain incomplete until the BJP firmly established itself in Bengal, adding that the latest election victory fulfilled that long-standing aspiration.
Massive Oath Ceremony Planned in Kolkata
The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government is scheduled to take place on Saturday at the historic Brigade Parade Ground on the occasion of Rabindra Jayanti.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, BJP president Nitin Nabin, several Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the event, which the BJP is projecting as the beginning of a new political era in West Bengal.
Bengal Enters New Political Phase
With the BJP preparing to form its first government in West Bengal after securing a decisive electoral mandate, the political landscape of the state appears set for a major transformation. The transition also marks the end of the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress under Mamata Banerjee.
