Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday reflected on the evolving nature of global security challenges, emphasizing that the coming era will be marked by “instability, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.” Speaking to students at TRS College in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh — his hometown — General Dwivedi underlined how the world is entering a phase where threats evolve faster than they can be comprehended.
“You and I are completely clueless about what the future holds... What is Trump doing today? I think even Trump doesn’t know what he is going to do tomorrow,” the Army Chief remarked, drawing laughter from the audience while making a serious point about unpredictability in world affairs.
He cautioned that modern warfare has expanded beyond traditional battlegrounds. “Challenges are coming so quickly that by the time you try to grasp an old challenge, a new one emerges. These are the same security challenges our military faces — whether on the border, terrorism, natural disasters, or cyber warfare,” he said.
Highlighting the growing dimensions of conflict, General Dwivedi added, “There are new things that have started: space warfare, satellites, chemical, biological, radiological, and information warfare.” His remarks shed light on how technology-driven domains are reshaping the strategic environment for defense forces globally.
Referring to recent misinformation trends, he said, “As you heard in Operation Sindoor, Karachi has been attacked. So much of such news came, which seemed like news to us too. Where did it come from, who did it?... In the scope of all these challenges, you have to work on land, in the sky, in water — all three domains.”
