In response to a series of violent incidents in Mangaluru and surrounding areas, Karnataka's Home Minister G Parameshwara has pledged that the state government is taking significant measures to tackle the rising concerns over public safety.
During a press conference in Tumakuru, Parameshwara highlighted the government's prompt actions following the murder of Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty on May 1, which was soon followed by the killing of Abdul Rahiman. "The government has acted decisively in light of the tragic events in Mangaluru. District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has already visited the crime scene, and I have personally assessed the situation as well," he stated.
The Minister announced the establishment of an anti-communal task force, which is set to be operational within ten days, specifically targeting the three coastal districts. This new unit will consist of a comprehensive team of officers, including Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs), and inspectors, sourced from various regions across the state. "These officers will undergo specialized training, including sessions at the Anti-Naxal Force training facility in Karkala. We are also ensuring that they are equipped with vehicles, uniforms, and the necessary operational authority," he added.
Addressing concerns about potential bias against specific communities, Parameshwara emphasized that the task force will operate without communal bias. "There are rumors suggesting that Hindu leaders are being specifically targeted. I want to make it clear that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their religious affiliation. Anyone who violates the law will face consequences," he asserted.
He also referred to a recent murder case in Koppal, assuring that it is under thorough investigation with a strong emphasis on maintaining law and order. "We are committed to preventing any further incidents in Mangaluru, Udupi, or Karwar. Our officials are dedicated to their responsibilities, and Karnataka continues to uphold a stable law and order situation," Parameshwara stated.
Citing a recent academic study, he remarked, "While I speak as the Home Minister, it's worth noting that research indicates Karnataka is among the safest states in the country." He concluded by reaffirming the government's dedication to justice, despite the occurrence of isolated incidents.
