The Bharatiya Janata Party has delivered a sweeping performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections, moving beyond the 200-seat mark and signalling a dramatic political shift in the state. Reacting to the trends, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the outcome as a landmark moment driven by public support for governance-focused politics.

In a message posted online, Modi said, “The Lotus blooms in West Bengal! The 2026 Assembly Elections will be remembered forever. People's power has prevailed and BJP's politics of good governance has triumphed.” He expressed gratitude to voters and assured that the party would work towards inclusive development, opportunity creation, and improved governance.

According to data available during the counting process, the BJP has taken a commanding lead in over 200 constituencies in the 294-member Assembly, comfortably surpassing the majority threshold. The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, is trailing significantly, indicating a major electoral setback after more than a decade in power.

The emerging results point to a decisive transformation in the state’s political landscape. For years, the TMC maintained a firm hold over West Bengal’s electoral politics, with the BJP gradually expanding its presence as the principal opposition. The current trends, however, reflect a wider shift in voter alignment, with the BJP making gains across multiple regions.

Modi reiterated that the mandate reflects confidence in the party’s development agenda and leadership approach. He emphasised that the government would focus on strengthening infrastructure, economic growth, and welfare delivery, ensuring that benefits reach all sections of society.
