Monsoon Session Begins: PM Modi Calls It ‘Victory Celebration’, Opposition Gears Up To Target Govt Over Key Issues

The Monsoon Session of Parliament kicked off today with high anticipation and heightened political temperature, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the tone by calling it a “celebration of victory”—highlighting India’s recent military and technological achievements. On the other hand, the Opposition, including the Congress-led INDIA bloc, is expected to corner the government on a host of contentious issues.

Addressing the media ahead of the session, PM Modi struck an assertive and optimistic note. “This Monsoon Session is not just a legislative event—it is a celebration of the spirit and strength of India. Our flag flying at the International Space Station is a symbol of national pride. Every MP and every citizen will echo that sentiment in Parliament,” he said.

The Prime Minister also drew attention to Operation Sindoor, a recent military campaign that he praised as a symbol of India's evolving defence capabilities. “Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of terror masterminds were destroyed within 22 minutes. It was precise, it was powerful, and the world is watching India’s Made-in-India military might with great interest,” Modi said, adding that the global appeal for India’s indigenously developed weapons is rapidly growing.

Another key point highlighted by the Prime Minister was the strong monsoon this year. “The monsoon represents renewal, hope, and economic growth. Initial reports show that this season is progressing well across the country. This is good news for our farmers, our rural economy, and indeed, every household in India,” he noted, calling rain “the driving force of agricultural and rural prosperity.”

However, the session is expected to be far from smooth. The Opposition is set to demand answers on a range of issues, including the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar—an exercise being viewed with suspicion ahead of the state elections. The INDIA bloc has accused the Centre of interfering with democratic processes and undermining electoral neutrality.

Additionally, US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about allegedly mediating to avert a “nuclear war” between India and Pakistan have stirred diplomatic ripples. The Opposition is likely to press the government for a detailed clarification in Parliament.

The government's controversial military operations under Operation Sindoor may also come under scrutiny, with the Opposition demanding greater transparency on rules of engagement and civilian impact.

Despite the expected stormy debates, the government has lined up several key bills for discussion—ranging from agriculture reforms to technology regulation and rural welfare schemes. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching next year, both the treasury and Opposition benches are expected to use this session to sharpen their political messaging.
