In a major push for clean and modern public transport, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday inaugurated the newly built Narela bus depot and flagged off a fleet of 100 electric buses that will serve nine routes across the capital.

Addressing the gathering, CM Gupta underlined her administration’s focus on revamping the city’s transport system and making it more environmentally friendly. “Our goal is to shift Delhi’s public transport fully to electric mode, modernise the system, and ensure minimum inconvenience to commuters,” she said, adding that the depot had been completed in a record three months.

Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and BJP MP Yogendra Chandolia were also present at the launch.

Highlighting the benefits, MP Chandolia said the new electric buses would particularly help rural areas of Delhi while also tackling environmental challenges. “Keeping rural areas in mind, the Rekha Gupta government has set up this depot, and 105 small buses will be dispatched from here. These buses will address traffic jams, and women will travel free of cost,” he said.

He also criticized the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, stating, “In the coming years, all buses in Delhi will be electric. They (AAP) only spread lies — if they had worked for people on time, they wouldn’t be in the opposition today.”

Earlier on World Environment Day (June 5), CM Gupta had committed to expanding Delhi’s electric bus fleet by an additional 280 buses by 2027 as part of the city’s electric vehicle (EV) policy.
