In a scathing remark during an interaction with students on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the AAP government in Delhi of preventing weaker students from progressing to Class 10 in an effort to enhance the city's overall board exam results. Speaking in a video, PM Modi claimed that only students who are "guaranteed to pass" are allowed to move ahead to the next grade, suggesting that the government aims to protect its reputation by ensuring high pass rates.
"I have heard in Delhi, they (AAP government) do not allow children to go further after Class 9. Only those children who are guaranteed to pass are allowed to go. Because if their result is bad, their government's reputation will be ruined. That is why very dishonest work is done," said Modi, on the final day of campaigning for the upcoming Delhi elections.
The allegations came as Delhi voters prepare to head to the polls on February 5, with results expected on February 8. The AAP government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, has long touted its achievements in revamping the city's education system, claiming to have built world-class schools and improved the quality of education in government-run institutions. However, PM Modi's statements cast doubt on these claims.
Meanwhile, the BJP, led by PM Modi, hopes to unseat the AAP in the upcoming elections. The AAP, which secured landslide victories in both 2015 and 2020, is aiming for another strong performance in the upcoming polls.
PM Modi also addressed the recent political defections in Delhi, where eight AAP MLAs joined the BJP. In a rally in RK Puram, Modi took aim at the AAP's broomstick symbol, commenting, “Aajkal hum dekh rahe hai ki voting se pehle hi jhaadu ke tinke bikhar rahe hai (Nowadays, we are seeing that even before the voting, broomstick is scattering everywhere).” He added that the defections were a clear indication of the growing discontent among Delhi’s residents with the AAP government, accusing the party of making false claims to cover up their failures.
