Radiation Leak In Pakistan? Here's What The UN Nuclear Watchdog Just Said

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that there has been no radiation leak from any nuclear facility in Pakistan, putting to rest speculation following recent reports about Indian airstrikes targeting the Kirana Hills region during Operation Sindoor. The clarification came after The Indian Express reached out to the global nuclear watchdog for a response.

“We are aware of the reports you are referring to. Based on information available to the IAEA, there has been no radiation leak or release from any nuclear facility in Pakistan,” the agency stated in its reply.

The IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre, which monitors global nuclear and radiological events, has not received any alerts about a radiation incident in Pakistan. The response from the UN body aligns with what the US State Department said earlier. On May 13, when asked about possible nuclear leaks in Pakistan, the department’s principal deputy spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, said he had no updates to share.

India’s Ministry of Defence had earlier dismissed reports that its airstrikes targeted Pakistan’s nuclear installations. Addressing the media on May 12, Air Marshal AK Bharti, Director General of Air Operations, said the Kirana Hills area was not hit during Operation Sindoor. Responding to a question, he said, “Thank you for telling us that Kirana Hills houses some nuclear installation. We did not know about it. And we have not hit Kirana Hills, whatever is there.”
