Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday visited Maulana Azad Medical College and its affiliated hospital, where she expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of student hostels and hospital administration. Speaking to reporters after her visit, the CM strongly criticised the previous government for what she described as years of neglect and mismanagement.

“I am shocked at the state of this institution,” Gupta said. “The hostels built between 1966 and 1990 for 1,200 students are now housing over 3,200 students. Not a single renovation or repair has been undertaken for decades. It is shameful and extremely dangerous.”

Gupta added that the living conditions pose a direct threat to the safety and mental well-being of the medical students. “It is painful that future doctors are forced to live in such adverse circumstances. There have been unfortunate incidents in the past, including cases like rape. This is a serious lapse in ensuring student safety,” she said.

Highlighting the need for swift action, the Chief Minister assured that her government would immediately begin renovation work and initiate plans for new hostel facilities. “This situation requires urgent correction. We will immediately provide funds for repair work, and also explore the provision of new hostels so that every student has a safe and dignified space to live and study,” she added.
