Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia has confirmed that Elon Musk’s StarLink satellite internet service will soon be launched in India. Speaking at an event in Gwalior, Scindia said StarLink will receive the third satellite connectivity licence in the country, following OneWeb and Reliance Jio.

"StarLink satellite connectivity is like another flower in the bouquet of telecommunications," said Scindia. "In addition to mobile connectivity, we have optical fibre connectivity and with that, satellite connectivity is important in far-flung areas where wired connections cannot be easily provided."

The minister added that after the licence is issued, spectrum allocation will follow, paving the way for StarLink’s rollout across India. The move is expected to boost internet access in remote and rural regions where traditional infrastructure has been difficult to implement.

Scindia emphasized the government's commitment to bridging the digital divide, saying this development will further strengthen India's telecom landscape by offering high-speed satellite internet where other forms of connectivity struggle.

"In the coming days, the third licence will be issued. The first licence was issued to OneWeb, the second licence was given to Reliance, and the third licence is being given to StarLink. After this, the government will provide spectrum and this service will soon begin in the country," he said.
