Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday stressed that contesting elections is an integral part of democracy, but underlined that the party’s bigger battle is to protect the Constitution and safeguard democratic values.

Speaking in Gujarat, Kharge said, “Our main target is to save the Constitution and safeguard democracy. The land where people like Mahatma Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel were born and attained freedom for the country – these two are highly honourable for us. The country is united due to them. There are two other people who do not want the Constitution to remain safe or save democracy...”

Although Kharge did not name anyone directly, his pointed remark hinted at his criticism of the current ruling establishment.

On the recently concluded Vice Presidential election, the Congress president admitted the party was not in a position to secure a majority. “We did not have the majority, we got (votes) as many as we had,” he said, noting that the results were expected.
