Life in Gurugram came to a virtual halt on Thursday after an overnight downpour inundated the city, leaving key roads submerged and traffic in disarray. The city recorded 133 mm of rainfall within a 12-hour window, including an intense burst of 103 mm in just 90 minutes between 7:30 pm and 9:00 pm on Wednesday night.
The sudden and heavy rain overwhelmed the city's drainage systems, triggering massive waterlogging across major stretches, underpasses, and residential areas. Morning commuters were left stranded as arterial roads turned into rivers, prompting the Gurugram District Administration to issue an urgent advisory for all private institutions and corporate offices to implement work-from-home measures for the day.
The administration, citing the India Meteorological Department’s orange alert, emphasized the need to ease road congestion and ensure public safety amid adverse weather conditions. “All corporate offices and private institutions in the district are advised to guide their employees to Work From Home on 10.07.2025 so that traffic congestion can be avoided,” the advisory read.
Several sectors, including Cyber City, Golf Course Road, and areas near HUDA City Centre, witnessed knee-deep water, paralyzing vehicular movement. In some cases, traffic remained stagnant for hours, with emergency services navigating difficult conditions to assist stranded residents.
Rainfall data collected between July 9 and July 10 (8:00 am to 8:00 am) showed high accumulation across multiple localities: Kadipur (119 mm), Harsaru (119 mm), Wazirabad (122 mm), and Farukh Nagar (67 mm) also received significant precipitation. Though southern areas like Sohna (18 mm) and Manesar (55 mm) saw comparatively less rainfall, overall disruption was city-wide.
