Will BJP's Alliance Shift Spell Trouble In Maharashtra? Insights from RSS-linked Survey

A recent analysis by the RSS-affiliated Marathi weekly, 'Vivek', suggests that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a significant voter backlash in Maharashtra due to its alliance with the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The informal survey, conducted among 200 individuals across Mumbai, Konkan, and western Maharashtra, sheds light on the reasons behind BJP's electoral setback in the state.

According to a PTI report, the BJP, which previously held 23 seats in Maharashtra's 48-member Lok Sabha contingent, saw its tally plummet to just nine in the recent elections. The survey indicates widespread disapproval within BJP ranks regarding the decision to form an alliance with Ajit Pawar, who had split from his uncle Sharad Pawar's NCP to join the 'Mahayuti' coalition in July last year.

Ajit Pawar's faction, recognized as the legitimate NCP by the Election Commission since February, managed to secure only one seat. In contrast, the Shiv Sena, under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's leadership, clinched seven seats, highlighting the dynamics within the state's political landscape.

The report underscores internal dissent within the BJP, attributing it to reservations among party members regarding the alliance with the NCP. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the opposition alliance comprising Congress, Shiv Sena, and NCP, emerged victorious in 30 out of Maharashtra's 48 constituencies, dealing a substantial blow to BJP's electoral prospects.

"The sentiments turned sharply against the BJP following its alignment with the NCP. This raises questions about the party's future strategies in Maharashtra, given the adverse political arithmetic," the 'Vivek' report observed.

Furthermore, the article highlights concerns over the BJP's approach to leadership induction from other parties, bypassing traditional talent grooming processes within the organization. It emphasizes the importance of internal coordination and empowering party workers in decision-making, citing these factors as pivotal to the BJP's electoral successes in other states, such as Madhya Pradesh.
