Suvendu Adhikari Likely To Be BJP’s First Chief Minister In West Bengal

Even as lakhs of students across West Bengal celebrated their Class 10 examination results on Friday, the state’s political spotlight remained fixed on an even bigger announcement — the identity of the next chief minister after the BJP’s historic election victory.

West Bengal is witnessing one of the most dramatic political transitions in its recent history after the Bharatiya Janata Party swept the 2026 Assembly elections with 207 seats, bringing an end to the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee.

The aftermath of the result has intensified political tensions across the state. Following the defeat, Mamata Banerjee reportedly described the change in power as a dark moment for Bengal politics and delayed stepping down, leading to major constitutional developments. Governor R. N. Ravi later dissolved the Assembly, paving the way for the BJP to begin the government formation process.

As suspense grows over who will lead Bengal’s first BJP government, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to hold crucial meetings in Kolkata with newly elected BJP legislators. The party leadership is expected to finalise its legislative leader before the swearing-in ceremony planned at the historic Brigade Parade Ground.

The BJP has strategically chosen May 9 for the oath-taking ceremony, aligning it with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, giving the political event symbolic cultural importance.

Among the strongest contenders for the top post is Suvendu Adhikari, who has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential faces in Bengal politics. Adhikari strengthened his political stature after defeating Mamata Banerjee in successive high-profile electoral contests, first in Nandigram and later in Bhabanipur, her traditional stronghold.

Inside BJP circles, many leaders reportedly believe Adhikari’s organisational experience and electoral performance make him the natural frontrunner to lead the new administration. His victories in multiple constituencies during the 2026 election further boosted his claim within the party.

However, the BJP’s leadership style has often surprised political observers, and several other prominent names remain in contention.

Former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh is still viewed as a key organisational pillar who helped expand the BJP’s presence in Bengal during its early growth years. Current state chief Sukanta Majumdar is also being discussed as a possible consensus candidate due to his steady campaign leadership and close ties with the party’s central command.

Another emerging name is Agnimitra Paul, whose rise from fashion entrepreneur to prominent BJP face has drawn attention. Known for her aggressive campaigning and outreach among women voters, Paul represents a younger and more modern image for the party in Bengal.

Adding further intrigue is Roopa Ganguly, whose massive electoral win has revived speculation around her political future. Widely recognised for portraying Draupadi in the television epic Mahabharat, Ganguly’s popularity beyond traditional political circles is seen as a significant advantage.

The final decision is expected after BJP legislators formally elect their leader before heading to Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form the government.

Whether the party chooses an experienced strategist like Adhikari or springs a surprise with another face, the decision will shape the BJP’s first full-term experiment in governing West Bengal after its landmark electoral breakthrough.
