In a surprising move that has stirred considerable debate, Manoj Soni, the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has tendered his resignation citing personal reasons, despite having over five years left in his tenure, which was set to end in May 2029. The resignation, submitted over two weeks ago, has yet to be formally accepted, leading to a flurry of speculation and controversy.

Sources of India TV indicate that Soni's decision to step down is driven by a desire to devote more time to "socio-religious activities." Official statements assert that his resignation is unrelated to the recent controversies surrounding the UPSC, notably the case of probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar. Khedkar is currently under scrutiny for allegedly using fraudulent means to exceed eligibility limits for civil services exams. The UPSC has lodged a criminal case against Khedkar and taken measures to bar her from future selections, adding fuel to the ongoing debate.

However, social media has been abuzz with allegations and counterclaims since the Khedkar issue came to light. Some users have accused serving IAS and IPS officers of using fake certificates to gain benefits reserved for other categories, such as the Other Backward Class (non-creamy layer) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Before his tenure as UPSC chairman, Soni served as Vice-Chancellor for three terms, including roles at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University in Gujarat and The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Known as one of the youngest Vice-Chancellors in India, Soni is a respected scholar in political science with a specialization in international relations.
