Amid the escalating passport controversy, Assam Police conducted a search at Congress leader Pawan Khera’s residence in Delhi following an FIR filed by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, on Monday. The move comes after Congress alleged that Sarma's wife holds three passports, sparking a heated political battle in the state ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections.

Earlier, addressing the media in Guwahati, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma warned he would take "stringent action" against Pawan Khera. "I will take stringent action against Congress leader Pawan Khera, just wait for some days. We will win at least 100 seats in the elections," Sarma said. He further dismissed Congress claims linking his family to Dubai apartments, stating the property documents were stolen from the document-sharing platform Scribd.

Sarma also launched a direct attack on Congress, claiming the party is “finished” in Assam. He alleged that foreign groups, including Pakistani social media entities, were helping Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Pawan Khera in the ongoing controversy. "Why did you take help from a Pakistani social media group? Whatever has been said about us, we will go to court, but my allegation is why is Pakistan helping Gaurav Gogoi," Sarma added.

Reacting to the allegations, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma said in an interview with ANI that the FIR was necessary to ensure justice. She accused Congress of acting out of frustration and attempting to "set up a playbook," emphasizing that allegations cannot be treated lightly.

The controversy has intensified just days before Assam goes to the polls, with campaigning officially ending today evening and vote counting scheduled for May 4. Political observers note that this row has already affected public sentiment, with CM Sarma claiming the NDA’s prospects are rising in the state.
