In a passionate address at the NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas, President Joe Biden highlighted the alarming statistics of child deaths due to gunshot wounds in America, labeling the situation as “stunning and sick.”
“More children in America die of gunshot wounds than any other reason, and that is stunning and that is sick, and it’s sheer cowardice if we do nothing about it,” Biden emphasized, urging for immediate action to remove “weapons of war” from the streets.
Criticizing former President Donald Trump’s policies, Biden recalled efforts to repeal Obamacare and enact tax cuts that primarily benefited the wealthy. “He tried to repeal Obamacare to kick millions, I mean, millions of black Americans off their health insurance. He had a $2 trillion tax cut that overwhelmingly benefited the super-wealthy, the biggest corporations, and exploded the federal debt larger than any president has in one term,” Biden stated, addressing the audience.
Biden also blamed Trump for what he described as mismanagement of the pandemic, particularly affecting black communities. “He left no room for us to invest in things that affect people’s lives, like childcare, elder care, and so much more, that grow the economy and help people,” Biden remarked.
Quoting Harry Truman, Biden emphasized his commitment to truth-telling, stating, “As Harry Truman said, I’ve never delivered giving anyone hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell. Well, here’s the truth about why Donald Trump’s presidency was hell for black Americans.”
The remarks come amidst the backdrop of the upcoming US presidential elections, where Biden and Trump are expected to face off once more. Trump recently announced JD Vance as his running mate, while Biden launched his re-election campaign earlier this year, framing the election as a pivotal choice for the future of American democracy.
