The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has given its final approval to the revised ward boundaries for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections 2025, bringing the city one step closer to conducting its long-delayed civic polls. The finalized ward structure has been officially published in the Maharashtra Government Gazette and uploaded on the BMC’s official website.
The process followed months of public consultation and scrutiny. Earlier, the SEC had released a draft delimitation notification on August 22, inviting citizens to submit their suggestions and objections. A total of 492 inputs were received by the September 4 deadline, and hearings were conducted between September 11 and 13. After considering all feedback, the final ward map was approved.
This approval paves the way for BMC elections, which have been pending for nearly three years. As India’s richest municipal body, the elections are expected to be held in mid-January 2026, ahead of the Supreme Court’s extended deadline of January 31 for completing local body polls in Maharashtra.
Preparations for the polls are already in full swing. The BMC has appointed 6,500 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to manage voter lists and polling arrangements. Additionally, over 4,000 supporting staff are being recruited to ensure smooth election management.
