Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government over the Indore water contamination tragedy that claimed 15 lives, holding the administration directly responsible for what he called a grave governance failure.
Taking to social media, Gandhi expressed outrage over reports that water tankers marked ‘Unfit for Drinking’ were allegedly used to supply water to residents. In a strongly worded post, he accused the administration of remaining inactive despite repeated warnings from citizens.
“Indore mein paani nahin, zahar banta aur prashasan Kumbhakarni neend mein raha. Ghar-ghar maatam hai, gareeb bebas hain, aur upar se BJP netaon ke ahankari bayaan,” Gandhi wrote, saying that families who lost loved ones deserved compassion, not arrogance from those in power.
The Congress leader questioned why complaints about foul-smelling and dirty water were ignored for days, how sewage was allowed to mix with the drinking water supply, and why authorities failed to halt distribution in time despite clear signs of danger.
Calling clean drinking water a basic right and not a government favour, Gandhi demanded strict action against officials and leaders responsible for the lapse. He said accountability must go beyond announcements and compensation.
Gandhi further alleged that the tragedy exposed the reality of BJP’s so-called “double-engine government,” accusing it of being insensitive to the suffering of ordinary people. Linking the incident to broader issues in Madhya Pradesh, he claimed the state was witnessing repeated breakdowns in governance that were costing lives.
