In a significant development, Justice Surya Kant is set to take over as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) following the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on November 23.
Chief Justice Gavai has formally recommended Justice Kant’s name as his successor in a letter sent to the Union Law Ministry, in keeping with the seniority principle that governs the appointment of the Chief Justice of India.
Justice Surya Kant, known for his balanced judgments and deep understanding of constitutional law, will take charge immediately after CJI Gavai’s tenure ends. His term as the Chief Justice of India will continue until February 9, 2027.
Justice Kant has served in several key judicial positions, including as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2019.
