13 Years After Modi's Tweet On Tahawwur Rana, Extradition Sparks Political, Public Reactions

An old tweet by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2011 has resurfaced and gone viral in the wake of Tahawwur Rana's extradition to India, reigniting political discussions around the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and India’s long-standing diplomatic push for justice.

The now-viral post, written when Modi was Gujarat Chief Minister, had slammed the UPA government following a US court's move to dismiss Rana’s involvement in the attacks. “US declaring Tahawwur Rana innocent in the Mumbai attack has disgraced the sovereignty of India & it is a major foreign policy setback,” Modi had tweeted then.

With Rana now in Indian custody, many online users shared the tweet, calling the extradition a long-delayed vindication. “Another promise fulfilled today,” one user posted, reflecting the general sentiment among Modi supporters.

The 64-year-old Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman, who is a close aide of 26/11 planner David Coleman Headley, landed in Delhi late Thursday under tight security. A multi-agency team led by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) brought him to India after the US Supreme Court rejected his appeal against extradition.

Rana was produced at Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Friday, where the NIA secured his custody for 18 days. The agency argued that his interrogation was crucial to uncovering the broader conspiracy behind the 2008 attacks, citing electronic evidence and his links to terror operatives including Ilyas Kashmiri and Abdur Rehman.

The NIA claims Rana assisted Headley with planning, logistics, and reconnaissance for the coordinated assault that left 166 people dead and hundreds injured across Mumbai.

Security was tight during his late-night court appearance, with the area cordoned off and media access restricted. Initially without legal representation, Rana was later assigned a lawyer by the Delhi Legal Services Authority.
