A tragic accident unfolded in Mumbai’s Mulund West on Saturday afternoon after a heavy concrete component from the under-construction Metro Line 4 corridor fell onto vehicles moving along LBS Marg, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
The mishap occurred around 12:15–12:20 pm near the Johnson & Johnson junction and close to the Mulund Fire Station. According to initial reports, a large section of concrete detached from an elevated metro structure and plunged onto the road below, striking a passing autorickshaw and at least one car.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden loud crash followed by chaos as debris scattered across the busy stretch. An autorickshaw driver and a female passenger were trapped beneath the fallen slab, prompting an urgent rescue operation. Videos circulating from the scene showed emergency workers and bystanders struggling to pull victims out from under the rubble. The autorickshaw was severely mangled, and one of the injured was seen being carried away in a blood-stained condition.
Fire brigade personnel, local police, civic ward teams and 108 ambulance services rushed to the location within minutes. Rescue teams worked to clear the debris and secure the area while traffic was temporarily halted, causing significant congestion on LBS Marg.
One victim, identified as Ramdhan Yadav, was declared dead on arrival at a nearby private hospital. Among the injured, Rajkumar Yadav (45) is reported to be in critical condition. Mahendra Pratap Yadav (52) and Deepa Ruhiya (40) are undergoing treatment and are said to be stable.
In an official statement, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said the incident took place near Pier P196 along the Rajiv (Milan) stretch of Metro Line 4. The authority stated that a parapet portion fell from height and struck a passing autorickshaw. It added that two injured persons were immediately shifted to hospital and that metro project teams are coordinating with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and disaster management authorities to manage the situation.
The precise cause of the structural failure remains unclear. Authorities have initiated a detailed inquiry to determine whether technical faults, material weakness or procedural lapses led to the collapse.
