Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to receive an invitation to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Tarique Rahman following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s sweeping electoral victory in Bangladesh.
Sources indicate that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is considering inviting Modi as a gesture aimed at resetting bilateral ties between New Delhi and Dhaka. The possible outreach comes after a period of diplomatic unease during the previous administration, and is being viewed as a signal of intent to improve cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The development follows a congratulatory message from Prime Minister Modi to Tarique Rahman after the BNP secured a decisive mandate. In response, the party publicly thanked the Indian Prime Minister for acknowledging Rahman’s leadership and the democratic outcome of the election.
In a message shared publicly, the BNP said it appreciated Modi’s recognition of the electoral verdict and described the result as a reflection of the people’s faith in its leadership and in democratic institutions. The party emphasised its commitment to inclusive governance, democratic values and progressive development for all citizens of Bangladesh.
It further expressed hope for constructive engagement with India, stating that future cooperation should be based on mutual respect, sensitivity to each other’s concerns and a shared commitment to peace and stability in the region.
A day prior to the public exchange, Modi confirmed that he had spoken with Tarique Rahman over the phone, signalling early diplomatic outreach following the election outcome.
If the invitation is formally extended and accepted, Modi’s presence at the swearing-in ceremony would carry symbolic and strategic importance. It would mark a significant moment in India–Bangladesh relations, potentially setting the tone for a new phase of engagement focused on trade, connectivity, regional security and economic partnership.
