Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially opened the much-awaited Noida International Airport, marking a major upgrade in air travel for North India. The new airport, located in Jewar, is expected to significantly reduce the burden on Indira Gandhi International Airport and improve connectivity across the NCR region.

Even though the airport has been inaugurated, regular commercial flights will take some time to begin. Officials indicate that operations are likely to start within the next 45 to 60 days, with the first flights expected around mid-May 2026. This gap will allow airlines to complete preparations such as slot allocation, staffing, and ground handling systems.

For passengers, the biggest benefit will be reduced travel time. Residents of Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and even Agra will now have a closer airport option, avoiding long journeys to Delhi. This is expected to make air travel faster and more convenient for millions of people in the region.

In the initial phase, the airport will mainly handle domestic routes. Major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, and Goa are likely to be among the first connections. Budget and expanding airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are expected to lead early operations.

The airport has been designed as a modern and scalable aviation hub, with the capacity to handle millions of passengers annually once fully developed. It is also planned to connect with expressways, metro lines, and regional transport systems, improving last-mile connectivity and boosting infrastructure growth.

Beyond travel convenience, the project is expected to create jobs, support businesses, and strengthen the overall economy of Uttar Pradesh and the NCR. In the coming months, more routes and possibly international flights may be added, positioning Jewar as a strong alternative to Delhi for air travel.
