US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for a high-level diplomatic visit focused on resetting India-US relations amid growing differences over trade, energy security and regional geopolitics. The visit comes at a time when both countries are attempting to stabilise ties following months of friction linked to tariffs, oil imports and strategic policy disagreements.
Before reaching the national capital, Rubio made a brief stop in Kolkata where he visited the Missionaries of Charity and paid respects at Mother Teresa’s memorial. The symbolic visit was viewed as an effort to combine cultural outreach with strategic diplomacy ahead of key political meetings in Delhi.
During his visit, Rubio is expected to hold extensive discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The talks are likely to focus on energy cooperation, Indo-Pacific security, defence ties and ongoing negotiations around a broader trade framework between the two countries.
The US Secretary of State will also participate in the upcoming Quad foreign ministers’ meeting alongside representatives from India, Japan and Australia. The summit is expected to address maritime security, semiconductor supply chains and China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Rubio’s India visit assumes significance as New Delhi continues to maintain a multi-alignment foreign policy, balancing its strategic ties with Washington while also engaging with countries such as Russia and Iran. Recent US concerns over India’s purchase of Russian crude oil and trade-related disputes have added pressure on bilateral ties, making the current diplomatic outreach particularly important.
Political observers believe the meetings in New Delhi could play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of India-US engagement as both sides attempt to navigate economic interests, geopolitical competition and regional security challenges.
