Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday flagged off the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9, marking a major step in improving connectivity between Mumbai and the fast-growing Mira-Bhayandar region. The newly opened stretch connects Dahisar East to Kashigaon, offering relief to thousands of daily commuters.

Fadnavis personally travelled on the metro during the inaugural run, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other senior leaders. The launch is being seen as a significant push towards strengthening the city’s public transport system.

Highlighting the broader vision, Fadnavis said Mumbai is moving towards a fully integrated transport network combining metro lines, electric buses, and water transport. He stated, “We are building a seamless and accessible transport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to make travel faster and easier for citizens.”

With this addition, Mumbai now has five operational metro corridors, placing it among the top cities in India for metro connectivity. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that ongoing projects will be completed within the next two years, and the city may soon have a larger network than Delhi.

Officials said the new 5.6-km elevated corridor includes four stations—Dahisar East, Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. The line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mira-Bhayandar and Mumbai, cutting journeys that earlier took up to two hours down to around 30 minutes.

The corridor will also connect with other key metro lines, especially Line 7, allowing passengers to travel directly towards Andheri and further link to the airport in the future. Authorities have introduced improved schedules and higher frequency services to ensure smoother operations.

The project, built at a cost of over ₹6,600 crore, is part of a larger plan to create a strong and efficient transport network across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Officials confirmed that the next phase of the line is nearing completion and will be opened later this year.
